The first of Islamic Economics Webinars series, organized in collaboration with IKAM and KTO Karatay University, was realized with the lesson titled “Historical Development and Future of Islamic Finance” by Necmettin Kızılkaya. The topics covered in the webinar were as follows:

A serious paradigm shift took place in the world with the 19th century. In this process, Muslims have taken an attitude that sees their past as problematic. We can say that we have just begun to realize the possibility that the institutions and practices in our history can say something to the present.

While the academicians reads English and Arabic sources, they bypassed Ottoman sources. The history of Islamic economics and finance have started with the 19th century and it is assumed that past experiences cannot say anything about today. We can say that some of famous researchers in the field of Islamic economics, even founding fathers, have a similar perspective.

As long as the information continues to be produced on the assumptions of other paradigms, it is unlikely that Islamic economic studies can offer something unique to humanity. The answer to the question of what happens in the future studies really depends us.
