2021 Islamic Economics Awards Found Their Owners

The 9th Islamic Economics Workshop, organized by the Research Center for Islamic Economics (IKAM), was held at Istanbul Commerce University between 17-19 September 2021 under the theme of “Problems of Economic Growth and Development”. In the workshop, Islamic Economics Awards were also presented. The workshop concluded after a packed inaugural day program and 7 successful workshop sessions spread over two days.
The Islamic Economics Awards, which have been given since the 6th Islamic Economics workshop, aim to reward and encourage researchers and institutions working in this field. This year, the awards, which have been given in 4 categories, namely the Islamic Economics Thesis Award, the Islamic Economics Research Award, the Islamic Economics Contribution Award, and the Islamic Economics Application Award since 2018, were presented to the owners.
The Islamic Economics Research Award is given to the veterans of the field of Islamic economics, who nurtured this field academically during the construction process of the field of Islamic economics and finance, raised young researchers in this field, and set an example and pioneer for them. The award was given to Cengiz Kallek in 2018, Prof. Sabri Orman in 2019, and to Monzer Kahf in 2020. This year's (2021) Islamic Economics Research Award is given to esteemed Islamic Economist Prof. Mabid Ali Al-Jarhi.
The Islamic Economics Contribution Award was given to Abdul Azim Islahi for his contributions to the formation of a strong awareness of the history of economics through his works, researches, teachings, and expanding the boundaries of this field. Islahi comprehensively examined the contribution of Islamic economic thought in general and Muslim thinkers to economics in particular, and the contributions of Muslim thinkers to economics in the period called the "missing link" that was ignored in the history of economics. Abdulkader Chachi received the award on behalf of Islahi, who could not attend the program due to the pandemic conditions.
The Islamic Economics Application Award is given to institutions that contribute to the implementation of the principles of Islamic economics with their contributions to the sector, especially in the field of Islamic finance, and are the pioneers of cooperation and interest-free transactions in the market with the business or partnership models they have established. The award was given to the Karz-ı Hasen Vakfı (Qard al-hasan foundation) in 2021. This foundation provides financial assistance to young people who want to get married but do not have sufficient economic savings by encouraging all kinds of education and training activities, social solidarity, and cooperation that will be needed for the establishment, protection, and revival of the family.
The Islamic Economics Thesis Award was a new award title added to the Islamic Economics Awards in 2020. It aims to encourage young researchers who continue their graduate studies in this field and contribute to the theoretical dimension of the field as well as the practice with their thesis. In this context, The Islamic Economics Thesis Award was given to Cem Korkut in 2021 for his doctoral study titled “Capital formation, accumulation, and structure in Islamic economics: Model and policy proposals at fund collection for Turkey”.
